What It’s Really Like Living in Puerto Vallarta: A Local’s Perspective

Puerto Vallarta might be known for its golden beaches, dramatic sunsets, and endless margaritas, but life here goes far beyond the vacation version. There’s a rhythm, a richness, and, yes, a few quirks that you only begin to understand once you call this place home.

I’ve been traveling through Europe for the past three weeks, and the change of scenery has given me space to reflect on how culture shapes the way we live and how moving to a new place is about more than geography. It’s about adjusting your pace, your priorities, and your perspective.

As someone who moved from Portland, Oregon, to Puerto Vallarta a few years ago, I’ve had the chance to experience that shift firsthand from navigating new cultural norms to building a home and business in a place where things move a little differently.

If you're curious about what living in Puerto Vallarta is really like, here’s a candid look at the lifestyle, the pace, the practicalities, and the beauty of making this coastal city your home.

The Everyday Pace of Life

Life in Puerto Vallarta slows you down in the best possible way. Afternoons stretch longer. Meals are lingered over. Errands might take a little longer than you're used to, but so does watching the sunset (and trust me, that's time well spent).

Time is a little more fluid here, and flexibility becomes one of your most valuable tools. Once you stop fighting the pace and start embracing it, you realize just how much more present you can be. That afternoon siesta? It’s a way of life for a reason.

The Beauty of Imperfection

One of the most significant shifts I’ve experienced living in Puerto Vallarta has been learning to let go of perfection. From handmade tiles with charming inconsistencies to vendors who don’t have a website but know exactly what you need. This city thrives on character and trust over polish and predictability.

This mindset also shows up in design. It’s not about showroom-perfect spaces but homes that feel relaxed, collected, and full of life. Embracing imperfection doesn’t mean lowering your standards; it means choosing joy and authenticity over control.

Community Is Everything

Puerto Vallarta has an incredibly welcoming community, with a blend of longtime locals, returning snowbirds, and fresh expats, creating a dynamic and diverse social fabric.

One of the most unexpected gifts of living here has been how quickly connections form. From casual chats at the Saturday farmers market to friendships sparked in Spanish class or design consultations, the city creates room for community in a way that feels... easier.

Still, it helps to be proactive. Join a group, take a class, and say yes to the invitation. The magic happens when you start showing up.

Daily Life Logistics

Yes, there are some trade-offs when living in Puerto Vallarta. Things can take longer. The power might go out during a summer storm. You may need to visit three shops to find something that used to be one click away.

But the upside is you also get to slow down. You learn the rhythm of the local markets. You walk more. You build relationships with vendors, contractors, and neighbors.

And for what it’s worth, the quality of fresh produce here alone makes up for the lack of next-day delivery.

The Design Reality

Designing a home in Puerto Vallarta can be incredibly rewarding, but it comes with its own set of rules. Lead times are longer. Materials might be different than what you're used to. Communication can be a little more nuanced when you're working across cultures and languages.

That said, living here also gives you access to incredible craftsmanship, talented local artisans, and the ability to create something unique. I’ve had the joy of designing homes that reflect this very spirit: unfussy, soulful, and deeply rooted in the environment and lifestyle of Vallarta.

Living in Puerto Vallarta is full of contrasts, vibrancy and calm, simplicity and complexity, challenges and unexpected beauty.

It’s not always easy. But it’s often worth it.

This city invites you to slow down, stay curious, and live more intentionally. For those open to adjusting their mindset and embracing the magic (and the mess), Puerto Vallarta offers not just a lifestyle but a whole new way of seeing and experiencing the world.
